Photos of the Day: March 4, 2009

Today I was out with my boss and a couple others scouting a possible location for a new cell site.  I got a great picture of the Laburnum house, built by Joseph Bryan (an important post-Civil War businessman in Richmond) in 1906 when the original house (built in 1849) burned down.  More info on the house and the Historic Laburnum Park District can be found here and here.  The house is beautiful, and I thought it was fun to stumble on some old Richmond that I didn’t know was there.

After dinner tonight, the kids and I went out to play in the snow for what may be the last time.  They’ve figured out how to use their sleds on the slide and I’ve got to admit it looks really fun!

Going Local: RVABlogs.com

When I first started blogging a couple of years ago, I searched all over google looking for blogs that were local.   I wanted to read from Richmond writers, or even Midlothian writers.  I didn’t find very much at the time.   I’m sure there was a lot out there, I just couldn’t figure out the right search terms to find them.

This week, a Google Blog Search for “Power Tools” lead me down the path to discovering over 230 local, Richmond area blogs!  The resulting post that has the distinguished honor of leading me to all the local blogs is Garage This at WORK:PLAY:FAMILY — who, I think, happens to be in my neighborhood.  While I’m reading his blog and thinking just how small the internets are, I click on the simple ‘rvablogs‘ link at the right of his page and I find, quickly, the best thing I’ve seen on the internet since Richmond Sunlight!

RVABlogs.com is a great tool for finding all the local blogs.  I’ve already subscribed to WORK:PLAY:FAMILY, Made in Richmond, Conservative Geek, and Tobacco Avenue.  And I think there are a few more I’ll be subscribing to in the next few days.

A Year Ago on der5er: Nov 2006 in Review

Cars DVDThat’s right!  It’s time for another look back into der5er’s past ramblings.  November 2006 was a good month.

  • Cars was released on DVD.
  • I rambled on about school fundraising.
  • And found out I was completely wrong.
  • Autoblog had 80′s week in their Reader Rides feature.  They started off with a very nice BMW 633Csi that I liked.

Ok, so I didn’t write too much.   But I think there was some quality there!

Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten that November 21 is the ‘birth day’ for this blog.  I’ll be celebrating that on November 21, 2005.

And that’s why I’m not an accountant!

Andrea Epps commented on my recent post regarding school fundraisers to point out that I was wrong about the fundraiser not making any money. Ms. Epps is the former PTA President at my kids’ school, so she should know. This is why I’m not an accountant. It seems that I can’t even read a simple balance sheet!
She also pointed out the main reason that the fundraiser is done in the fall. Simply put, if they do it any other time, it doesn’t make any money.
