For the Love of Tools: Milwaukee Quik Loc

Milwaukee Quik Lok chuckOnce, while installing a ceiling fan in one of the kids rooms a while back, I lost two spade bits in the wall.  I was drilling on the top plate of the wall from the attic to run cables, and (twice) the quick connect chuck I had attached to my drill released the bit when I hit the wood–dropping the bit down in the wall.  My quick connect chuck, like most, released by pushing backward on the chuck (like what happens when you run into the wood).  Well, no more.

Milwaukee Quik Lok Bit SetMilwaukee Tools has solved this problem.  Their new Quik Lok chuck requires you to push forward on it to release the bit.   I picked one of these sets up and it is great.  It has all the bits you need to drill and drive (except the spade bits…) and few of the ones you don’t need.   Most of these sets come with too many that you don’t need.  The case is sturdy and just the right size to fit in the carry case for my drill–leaving enough room for a stud sensor, bullet level, pencil, and a few extra screws.

If you do any projects around the house with a drill, this set is a must-have.

For the Love of Tools: Safer Gutter Cleaning

iRobot LoojiRobot – NEW! iRobot Looj 120 Gutter Cleaning Robot

iRobot just announced the availability of what I think is the best thing since sliced bread! It’s the Looj Gutter Cleaning Robot. It doesn’t slice, dice, or julienne, but it does clean your gutters quickly and safely! I’ve been eyeing these ever since they first appeared as rumor on the internet, and they are now available! You have to check out the video to get the full impact.

You do still have to climb your ladder, but only once for each gutter. The Looj has a ’3 stage’ auger that flips leaves, pine cones, and other debris right over the side of the gutter. You send it zooming down your gutters with a wireless remote control, and then bring it back (I don’t know if the auger spins when the Looj is in reverse).

At $99 for the base model, and $169 for the higher end (which really just adds a replacement auger, replacement battery, and holster), this is much cheaper than any gutter helmet type of gutter cleanliness system.  I think the base model is good enough, replacement batteries are $30 and replacement augers are $15.  The holster is just fluff, and who would want to put a dirty Looj into a nice, clean, holster?

I think I just found the first item for my Christmas list.

For the Love of Tools: Stanley FUBAR

Toolmonger > I Want It: The FUBARStanley 55-099 FatMax Xtreme FUBAR

We all know what FUBAR stands for (Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition), but Stanley wants us to think it stands for Functional Utility BAR. For sure, if you’ve got a demolition project, you’re going to be thinking the more traditional meaning of FUBAR when this tool gets done with the job!

Weighing in at 4 lbs, the Stanley FatMax Xtreme FUBAR is not a tool that’s carried lightly. It can be used for prying, bending, striking, and opening a beer.  At $39.97 (Amazon: FUBAR), it’s also not in the cheap category.  However, I think this is one tool I’ll have to add to my arsenal.  I don’t know yet exactly what I’ll need it for, but just having it hanging from your tool belt, everyone will know you mean business!  This thing is much more versatile than your standard pry-bar, and I’m not sure that it’s intended to replace that.  But that’s mostly what I’d probably use it for.

Yes, the FUBAR is available in the der5er Amazon store!

UPDATE: Thanks to Grandma Shirley–my new FUBAR is on it’s way!!!

For the Love of Tools: Computerized Jack Stand

I was going to make the obvious joke about getting car-jacked…but I’ll leave that one alone.
Way back in “For the Love of Tools I” I talked about needing to find new uses for specialized tools. Well, here’s a definite new use for the old tower desktop PC in your office:
