What an awesome way to start the day!  I left the house this morning to run a nice, easy 5k race.  I came home with a new personal record!

The morning started out cold, at about 43 degrees.  I thought this would feel warm to me, but I guess I wasn’t prepared for the wind!  At home, I’ve usually got plenty of trees around to block the wind, but at the mall there weren’t any and the wind was definitely blowing!

Check-in started at 7:30 right in front of the mall.  The race bag included my bib number (270), a cotton T-shirt in a wonderful shade of lime green, a plastic cup from Marks & Harrison, and the usual ads and coupons.

There were quite a few people signing up this morning.  As a matter of fact, I would guess that SCAN had just as many people sign up today as they had pre-registered.  I don’t know how many shirts they ordered, but I did hear that they ran out!

At just before 8:30, the race orgainizers had a warm-up session for the 1 mile kids run (my kids didn’t run today).  The kids participating in the run this morning really seemed to enjoy doing their warmups, and it looked like they were having a great time!  Yes, that is the Chick-Fil-A Cow warming up with the kids.

The kids race started a little after 8:30.  There was some confusion regarding the course, but this was quickly worked out and the kids got on their way.

GO! GO! GO!

GO! GO! GO!

But the Chick-Fil-A Cow didn’t make it very far.

The 5k started at 9:00 AM.  It was still in the mid 40′s, but everyone seemed excited.

According to my Nike+ iPod, the course was actually 3.03 miles (instead of 3.1 miles).  I’m very happy with my finish time of 24:01, which puts my pace at an amazing-I-can’t-believe-I-did-it 7:55 (iPod) minutes per mile!

After the race, they had a small party in the food court.  A band was playing, but I didn’t manage to catch their name.  They were actually pretty good.

Overall, I’d say this was a pretty good race.  It’s only the second orgainized 5k I’ve run, and I had a lot of fun!

Sorry no idea on the band. Congrats on your own PR!
