What the TSA can Tell us About Healthcare

Written By: der5er - Oct• 25•07

Airport Screening MachineThe Transportation Safety Administration was created in November 2001 in response to the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on the United States.á They are tasked with ensuring the security of US air traffic.á And they are failing.

Security screeners at two of the nation’s busiest airports failed to find fake bombs hidden on undercover agents posing as passengers in more than 60% of tests last year, according to a classified report obtained by USA TODAY.

Of course, not all airports are manned with TSA Screeners.á SFI screeners work for a private company that is overseen by the TSA,á They didn’t fail the test:

San Francisco International Airport screeners, who work for a private company instead of the TSA, missed about 20% of the bombs, the report shows.

And in the 1990′s, when the TSA wasn’t manning the airports:

…showed that screeners missed about 40% of fake bombs, according to a separate report by the Government Accountability Office…

I’m stating the obvious, but 20% and 40%, while not perfect scores, are much better than 60%.á The TSA claims they missed 60% because they made the test tougher, but the SFI screeners passed the same test that the TSA screeners failed.

What can this tell us about healthcare?á Well, the TSA was created with the idea that government should provide our security and could do it better than the private companies who were doing it before.á Many in our government think the same thing about healthcare.á With these results from the TSA showing how well a government program can do something previoulsy done in the private sector, I think we have to ask ourselves if we really want to grow the government to provide healthcare.

Now, some will say that the government already runs healthcare for our Congressmen and it’s doing a fine job.á That’s true.á The government run healthcare insurance provided to members of Congress is pretty good.á Does anyone think that’s what we’ll get for our tax dollars?á

Next time you think about government run healthcare, think about the Veterans Administration Hospitals that got so much news earlier this year.á Next time you think about government run healthcare, think about government run airport security.
