The BIG TO DO!

Written By: der5er - Dec• 13•05

So, what would a DIY car owner’s blog be without a ‘to do’ list. As anyone who’s read the blog cover to cover (all 6 of you), I’ve recently completed one item–my suspension. Here’s the ever-growing list of things that need to be done on my 1988 BMW 535is e28:

  • Respray paint on entire car. There, I’ve said it. It will probably never get done, because the paint job I’d like to do is more than the car is worth. But, I hate the peeling clear coat. So, unless I ever move on to another e28, this will permanently be at the top of my to do list.
  • Replace the cracked clutch pedal bracket.
  • Replace driver’s door pillar trim panel. I can never remember, is this called the B pillar? Mine, like many others, has vinyl that has separated from it’s backing. It actually got so bad at one point that I couldn’t shut the door until I cut off the separated section. I’ve got another one in the garage, but it has the same problem and will require glue. Since the driver’s seat has to come out to replace this one, I’ll probably wait a while…
  • Replace the head (and all internals), exhaust manifold, intake manifold and valve cover. I’ve got a spare head in the trunk, a spare cam and ceramic coated exhaust manifold in the garage, and the intake and valve cover are being painted by a friend. Of course, the spare head has scratched cam bearings, so I don’t know if it will ever make it into the car. The cam is a 282 degree (vs stock 260) from another M30 powered M30, I think it came out of a 733, but I can’t be sure.
  • Take care of the corrosion on the left rear brake light so the darn thing will work all the time.
  • Put the back seat back in. I haven’t put it back in after doing the suspension, and I’m getting tired of looking at painted metal on the inside of the car.
  • Fix the driver’s seat controls. Most of them work, I just can’t move the seat forward or back.
  • Fix the passenger seat controls. Most of them don’t work, I can only move the seat forward or back. Hmm…seems like I should put them together and make one good one!
  • Bilstein sports and ST springs suspension repair/upgrade. Just had to put something on the list to cross out!
  • Fix the electrical gremlin in my fuse box that makes my heater fan intermittent.
  • Fix the sometimes squeaky heater fan.
  • Swaybar links.
  • Replace the front right speaker.
  • Valve adjustment Done on 5/22/06…will probably be added back in later, when it needs it again.
  • That’s all for now, but I think this is a post that I will put up a link for and actually update when I think of something new, or when I cross something off the list.
